My last date of 2011 was with Deux. You'll recall that he wanted to take me out (and pay for) a very expensive meal for our first date, but I wouldn't let him (pay, that is). We had a lovely date, but it didn't feel overly personal and I got the feeling that perhaps we were not each other's ideal. Perhaps I am not as close to my family as he is his, perhaps I am too independent for his tastes, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.
After the initial date I got a text message making sure that I had gotten home safely. Then nothing. I wasn't hurt, just resigned. (It is what it is.)
It was about a week and a half later that I got a message from him via the website asking if I'd like to go out on another date. Intriguing. Since I had a good meal with him the last time, I agreed and he took me out to a place called Bartlett's at the intersection of Anderson and Burnet. A nice little restaurant with a much more reasonable budget. (I let him get this one.)
We were seated immediately - this time I had much more family stuff to share, having just been on the phone to my brother about Christmas dinner cooking plans and details about selling him my old car. We ordered separate dishes this time - I had swordfish while he had salmon. Apparently he was about to go home to Brazil that next week and was excited about a high school reunion party (their 15th, I believe). Apparently it was going to be a very big thing and he was excited.
I guess there's not a lot to say about the date aside from the fact that it was very nice. Good conversation, good food, and a date stretching over several hours (we nearly closed the restaurant). I was satisfied at the end, the kiss lasted a little longer this time, and we went our separate ways. Another text message when I got home making sure I was safe (very courteous, this one), and that was the end.
Since that point, I've had no communication (email, text, other messages) from him. He's probably due back from Brazil soon (or maybe he is already), so we'll see if anything follows in the next few weeks. I'm not holding out any false hopes - we still don't know each others last names (and he seemed puzzled when I asked what area of Austin he lived in). I did do something very nice in preparation, though - during dinner we had a discussion of foreign comics (and the fact that very few heroes/superheroes of any genre originate outside of America) and he mentioned that he collects books of a French comic "Asterix et Obelisk". It's a funny Nordic-inspired cartoon that basically follows two immortal viking dudes as they travel through history and interact with famous people and in events throughout history. (Also filled with French pride.) So while I was in Quebec (that's French Canada) with Mrs. Weiss, we went to a bookstore and picked up a copy of one of their stories in French. If he invites me to dinner again, I will present it as a thank-you token.
2012 has possibly brought me Trois - I will keep you posted if there are any developments. :-)
