Updating for no particular reason...

It's the beginning of another long cycle of work days (50 hours in 5 days), including work on two costume projects for next weekend. I don't know how far I'm going to get on the things, but at least I can hope to make them look non-craptastic. Or something.

The first thing I'm messing with is a "20's style" dress for this weekend's Decemberists concert. I got this dress in a Wisconsin goodwill with my Jessa for about $8. It was a kind-of shapeless black dress, mostly shapeless because it was a size 10 and too big. I bought it mainly because it had a cool asymmetric white collar that I thought looked very classic. And then I found two cloche hats at the Urban Outfitters up there, giving me lots of motivation to turn this strange dress into something befitting 20's fashion. I figured that the best thing to do was remove the neck-to-hem white piping (there were two pieces of it that "outlined" my figure on the front panel) and add some sort of dropped waist and some sort of fringe. It ended up being a good thing that the dress was too big, because I ended up serging off more than I'd intended in the process, leaving the dress a little huggy.

The dress, being basic black, would not have worked with the ordinary $3.99/yd. black fringe they sell at WalMart. I wanted something flashier, or at least something that would stand out. Beaded fringe was rare except in the curtain section, and even then it ran about $25 a yard. Waay too expensive. Finally after a couple days of searching I found some lace that I've been putting in tiers down the bottom of the dress. It's kind of like "classy flapper". The only problem comes in that it takes so long to get the layers of lace pinned to the dress (avoiding the lining which I've subsequently cut holes into) and then to make sure the lace gets sewn down in one single straight line that goes roughly parallel with the previous piece of lace. I spent a good four hours on three tiers today (that and I DID get the other four layers pinned). It should not have taken that long by any means, and it makes me question my skills.

For actual Halloween, my BME is going to go as Fry from Futurama, so I'm going to attempt to go as Leela. It's actually a simple costume - white tank top (check), black pants (check), military boots (will find at a surplus store soon), purple hair (check), and a silver armband/gauntlet (not-check). Oh yeah. And somehow making it look like I have one eye without blinding myself. (Eeep.)

I've read stuff online about this whole single-eye creation process, but most of them involve near-blindness or just look completely wrong. With any luck I'll get time to make something semi-reasonable. Or I'll just wear a patch.
